9/11 Twenty

Twenty individuals respond to 9/11 twenty years later

Project Summary

The 9/11 Twenty Project is an online audio-diary exhibition of personal reflections from twenty contributors who experienced 9/11 twenty years ago. Participants will reflect on the moment they knew of the 9/11 attacks, as well as personal, national or global cultural changes that have occurred since 9/11/2001. Our project will primarily rely on audio submissions, but will also utilize survey responses, archival images, footage and other forms of nostalgic media, to re-create a version of 2001 – seen from 2021. Perhaps nothing in the past twenty years has evolved more than our relationship to technology, particularly social media. To honor that shift, 9/11 Twenty will be shared online, where additional site visitors will be invited to respond with their own audio entries, eventually creating an ecosystem of social audio. In the age of COVID, relationships have evolved in extremely counterintuitive ways. Physical distance is encouraged and close proximity is deemed unhealthy. As a result of this shift, a newfound respect for authentic experiences has emerged. Our need to connect via real stories, experiences and interactions directly inspired the 9/11 Twenty project. We aim to cultivate digital interactions between strangers who are telling personal, emotional and possibly painful stories about an experience shared globally. The virtual audio dialogue will ultimately make this project a truly public, collaborative and unique work. Finally, so that we’re all clear, No portion of this project or its contributions will be used for any type of sales, commerce, or paid promotion.

FAQ

1) I skipped to the FAQ, what’s this project about again?

The 9/11 Twenty Project is an online archive featuring twenty contributors responding to 9/11 after twenty years. We will focus the archive on social audio submissions to create a virtual dialogue of memory and reflection.

2) If I contribute, how will you use my responses?

On 9/11/2021, we’ll post all twenty entries to our website and Soundcloud. We may use snippets of audio or text on our social media pages to promote the project. We won’t share any data or submissions info with any third party. Your contribution may look and may or may not sound something similar to this example.

3) Do I have to submit an audio entry to participate in the project?

No, an audio entry isn’t required but it is strongly encouraged. For those that can hear, we feel that the voice is simply more direct in communicating emotion. We understand from an accessibility standpoint that audio could be difficult for some, and therefore we are also relying on text responses.

4) If I contribute audio, how will the recording be used?

We’ll add your recording along with your picture and responses. See this entry for a general idea.

5) What if I finish the survey, press “Contribute My Story”, then change my mind?

No problem. We don’t own your submission, you do. Just email us your request and we’ll delete your submission within 24hrs.

6) What if I send a recording that I don’t like, can I do a retake?

If you need to replace your recording, just email us an updated file with your first name for reference and and we’ll replace it.

7) Can I listen to an entry before I contribute?

Sure, just check out this example entry.

8) Was 9/11 an inside job?

We’re not using this project to directly speculate outside of the official findings or push any explicit political platform. With respect to the victims of 9/11, this is a purely archival project.
