Manifesting Opportunities

WINTER 2022

The Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant

The Foundation wishes to encourage artists who have dedicated their lives to developing their art, regardless of their level of commercial success. Please note that these grants are available only to mature individual visual artists. The Foundation defines maturity in this case as having worked for 20 years or more in a mature phase of art. The Gottlieb Foundation does not fund organizations, educational institutions, students, graphic artists, or those working in crafts. The disciplines of photography, film, video, or related forms are not eligible unless the work directly involves, or can be interpreted as, painting or sculpture. The Foundation does not fund exhibitions, installations, or projects of any kind. Last year, the Foundation awarded grants of $25,000 each to 20 artists.

NARS Satellite Exhibition Program

A Cosmic Shift in consciousness, in direction, in optics or energy, has the power to inspire exploration. It can help unlock the mysteries of the universe, shedding light upon the role of variety, evolution, and multidimensionality. Whether engaging with the unexplored regions of our own consciousness or the infinite expanse beyond, our means of perception are impacted by a spectrum of systems and forces that govern everything from the microscopic to the macrocosmic aspects of our natural world. The public exhibition of Cosmic Shift aims to draw attention to the infinite coexisting vibrancies all around us, generating a myriad of lenses through which to examine, connect, and challenge our methods of perceiving ourselves, our minds, our environments, and the intricacies of our existence.

Deadline: March 7, 2022 at 11:59 pm.

Recommended Reading for Artists

Here’s a list of books that help decipher the codes of the art world and perhaps add some perspective to your work. We’ll update this list regularly so that we can consider a wealth of artistic perspectives.

This exhibition catalog to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse chronicles the pervasive visual and sonic parallels in the work of Black artists from the southern United States. It looks to contemporary southern hip-hop as a portal into the roots and aesthetic legacies that have shaped contemporary art from the 1920s to the present. It features multiple generations of both academically trained and “outsider” artists working in a variety of genres and disciplines.

The Albers book also addresses the conditionality of color, how color can exist in our imagination, and when color is communicated, how it can get lost in translation. This leads to the question of whether color is only relative to given situations.
